LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Sixty-two percent, or 59,532 of Jefferson County Public School (JCPS)
students are fed during the week by the free or reduced meal program. On
Thursday, November 14, Steve Trager, Chairman and CEO of Republic Bank
hosted more than 50 concerned Louisville business leaders to discuss the
current hunger crisis among our area’s youth and how a national
nonprofit with local roots, Blessings in a Backpack makes a difference.
Blessings in a Backpack fills the weekend gap for nearly 3,500 JCPS
students at 30 schools by providing backpacks full of food for them to
take home over the weekend.
At the breakfast, companies and individuals stepped forward and raised
more than $100,000 to support Blessings in a Backpack programs across
Jefferson County – which will be used to feed more than 1,200 of
participating students.
“I am thrilled with the generosity of our community to help our young
children in their time of need,” said Trager. “Through this effort I’m
happy to report that starting today, these at-risk students will not go
hungry over the weekend.”
“We are grateful to this group for their help in feeding the students
across Jefferson County who need it most,” said Brooke Wiseman, chief
executive officer, Blessings in a Backpack. “Partnerships such as these
enable Blessings to fulfill its mission – ensuring that impoverished
American school children are fed over the weekends.”
